Vertical composition: how to create cinematic images in portrait mode.

11-02-2025 By Budgetcam Tips & Tricks

We're all used to filming in widescreen, but with the rise of social media and mobile content, vertical video is here to stay. But how do you make sure your vertically filmed images look as cinematic and professional as horizontal video? In this article, we'll give you practical tips for making the most of vertical composition.

How do you film vertically?

Before you start filming, you need to determine how you are going to position your camera vertically. This can be done in several ways:

  1. Simply rotate your camera a quarter turn and you're ready to film.
  2. Use a cage with screw holes on the side so you can place the camera stably on a tripod.
  3. L-bracket from Wooden Camera is ideal for larger cameras such as the Sony FX6.
  4. DJI Vertical Camera Mount for the DJI RS3 Pro gimbal allows your camera to be mounted directly vertically for stable moving shots.

Framing in vertical video

In horizontal video, we often use the rule of thirds. With vertical composition, however, we work with a different approach.

1. Keep the subject in the middle

Because you have less width to work with, it is important to place your subject at the center of the frame. Whether it is a person, a product or an action moment, make sure it is on the vertical axis of the frame. This ensures a balanced and natural composition.

2. Create depth in your shots

One way to make your vertical images more interesting is to use foreground and background objects. By including these in your composition, you create a sense of depth. Blurred elements in the foreground and background help give a more professional look to your video.

3. Pay attention to the “lower third” space

When creating content for social media, the bottom third of your image is often covered by usernames, captions and subtitles. So make sure that important visual information is always above this line so you don't lose anything important.

Conclusion

Creating vertical videos can take some getting used to, but with the right approach and framing, you can create professional and cinematic images.
