Sony A7 V now available to rent at Budgetcam: the new hybrid allrounder for creators

16-12-2025 By Budgetcam Other

The Sony A7 IV was already a favorite in our rental line-up, but Sony has now taken a big step forward. With the new Sony A7 V you get a full frame hybrid camera that combines photo and video even more smoothly, packed with smart AI features and serious video capabilities. Perfect if you want to handle as many different types of productions as possible with a single body.

At Budgetcam, the A7 V has now been added to the line-up, ready to join you on your next shoot or production.

In short: what makes the Sony A7 V special?

The A7 V builds on the winning formula of the A7 IV, but with a number of upgrades:

  • 33 megapixel full frame Exmor RS sensor with partially stacked architecture for more speed and less rolling shutter
  • New BIONZ XR2 processor with dedicated AI unit
  • Up to 30 frames per second with pre capture, so you record moments even before you press the shutter
  • 7.5 stops in body image stabilization (IBIS) for much more stable handheld shots
  • 4K up to 60 fps in full frame and 4K up to 120 fps in Super 35 crop, in 10 bit 4:2:2
  • Advanced AI autofocus that recognizes and tracks people, animals, vehicles and more

Sounds technical? No worries. Below we translate the key specs into practical benefits, so you immediately know what they mean for you as a creator.

The sensor: 33 megapixel full frame, but what does that mean?

The Sony A7 V features a 33 megapixel full frame sensor. That is the same number of pixels as the A7 IV, but with a partially stacked (semi stacked) design.

In practice, that means for you:

More flexibility in post production

  • 33 megapixels is more than enough to crop, straighten or create social crops without immediately losing quality.
  • Ideal for campaigns where you want 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 from the same shot.

Better at handling action

  • Thanks to the faster readout of the sensor there is less risk of distortion with fast movement or quick pans (rolling shutter).
  • Very useful for sports, events, run and gun work or gimbal shots.

Wide dynamic range

  • The combination of sensor and processor delivers around 16 stops of dynamic range from the camera.
  • Highlights blow out less quickly and shadows keep more detail.
  • This is a big advantage especially in high contrast situations such as bright sun, backlight or stage lights.

Autofocus with AI: simply tack sharp

Sony was already known for its autofocus, but the A7 V goes a step further with a new BIONZ XR2 processor with a built in AI unit.

What that gives you as a creator in concrete terms:

  • 759 phase detection points across almost the entire frame, so the camera focuses extremely quickly, even in low light or with fast primes.
  • AI subject recognition detects eyes, faces, animals, birds, cars, motorcycles and more. You can focus on directing, the camera keeps your subject locked.
  • Real time tracking follows a model walking toward the camera, a skater jumping in your direction or a car driving by, without you constantly having to move the focus point.

For beginners it almost feels like cheating: you simply get sharp shots far more often. For experienced creators it means you can give more attention to framing, light and direction.

Video: 4K up to 120 fps, 10 bit, S Cinetone and S Log3

The A7 V is clearly built with hybrid creators in mind. The camera offers:

  • 4K up to 60 fps in full frame, oversampled from the 7K sensor for extra detail
  • 4K up to 120 fps in Super 35 crop for slow motion, while maintaining high quality
  • 10 bit 4:2:2 recording in XAVC S, XAVC HS and XAVC S I, suitable for serious grading
  • Picture profiles such as S Cinetone and S Log3 for a cinematic look and matched workflows with other Sony cameras

What does that mean in practice?

  • If you want cinematic talking heads, you shoot in 4K 25 fps with S Cinetone for beautiful skin tones straight out of camera.
  • For commercials or mood films you can record in S Log3 for maximum dynamic range and grading flexibility.
  • For social snippets, sports or dance you can shoot 4K 100 or 120 fps for super smooth slow motion, without having to drop back to 1080p.

Stable image: 7.5 stops IBIS and active stabilization

The A7 V has 5 axis sensor shift stabilization on board, good for up to 7.5 stops of compensation.

Practical advantages:

  • You can shoot handheld with longer shutter speeds without everything immediately becoming blurry.
  • In combination with Sony lenses with optical stabilization, handheld video becomes much smoother, even without a gimbal.
  • With dynamic active stabilization in video the camera irons out even more small jitters, which makes run and gun shooting a lot more relaxed.

For beginners this means you get a stable result more quickly, even if your stance is not perfect yet. For experienced creators it can be the deciding factor between bringing a gimbal or leaving it at home.

Burst, pre capture and reliability

If you shoot a lot of action, the burst mode of the A7 V is a major upgrade:

  • Up to 30 photos per second with the electronic shutter
  • Pre capture buffers images from just before you fully press the shutter button

That is ideal for sports, weddings, wildlife or one off moments in commercials: the decisive moment is simply in your selection more often.

Body and controls: familiar Sony, but smarter

In terms of form factor the A7 V stays close to the A7 IV, but with some useful improvements:

  • 4 axis tilting and vari angle 3.2 inch LCD that makes vlogging, low angle and vertical shooting easier
  • 3.69 million dot OLED viewfinder with blackout free display during fast bursts
  • Improved grip and button layout, so the camera feels more secure in the hand, even with longer lenses
  • Full size ports: full size HDMI, headphone jack, microphone input, USB C 3.2 and multi interface shoe for digital audio

Thanks to the dual card slots (1x CFexpress Type A or SD, 1x SD UHS II) you can safely back up internally or separate photo and video, which is very convenient for professional jobs.
